about

“Fall” is the second and final LP from reverb-pop five-piece Murder Shoes. This posthumously released collection is a combination statement of purpose and clearing house of unfinished works, finding the band at their weirdest and best.

Moving away from the decidedly aquatic and 60s-indebted sound that tied together their earlier works, “Fall” is full to bursting with more modern textures and musical ideas; from choppy, angular verses that give way to densely packed dream-pop choruses (“Missile,” “Far Away”) to gently drifting art-pop cuts that find the band further than ever from their garage-pop roots (“Hands,” “Cash on Fire”). Of course, when the band does tackle more straight-ahead material, it’s with a sense of purpose and economy that make these cuts some of the best in their catalog (“Mirror Sky,” “Tape Organ”).

No one likes to see a great band break-up, but a record like “Fall” certainly helps to soften the blow, reassuring the listener that they both went out on top and have more energy and ideas to contribute to future projects. At the very least, it’s a great document of a band at peak power whose fleeting beauty you can appreciate before winter obliterates everything - literally and otherwise.
